Legislative update (brief) - thanks to GAE - our dues dollars at work: HB 897 - the bill that GAE has opposed since its introduction, was heard by the Senate Education Committee with no action taken. Please contact Committee Members ask them to vote NO on HB 897. Also, SB 167 (Common Core) has already passed the Senate without much resistance. Supporters of Common Core including GAE members spoke about the bill and its possible negative impact on systems across the state. Supporters of the bill decried Common Core and the need for the legislation and urged its immediate passage. After the 3 and 1/2 hour hearing, Chairman Brooks Coleman announced Rep. Mike Dudgeon (who is carrying the bill for Sen. William Ligon), will meet with Sen. Ligon and formulate possible changes to the bill, which should be revealed on Monday, March 10 (this is cut and pasted, I dont have todays information). The House Education Committee will vote on the bill on Wednesday, March 12.
