Lent Devotional Day 32- Thursday 4/10/14 John 8:12 (NLT) Jesus said to the people, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you wont be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” Reflection: Earlier we looked at the imagery of light and darkness as it relates to our life in God. Today we look at a single statement Jesus made about himself. I am- not was; not will be; AM! Present tense. True in him then , and true in us now. The light- not a light, THE light. Exclusive of others claiming to be or to have light separate from him. Of the world- Inclusive of all people. Not just for Jews; not just for Christians; for all people. ALL PEOPLE. The light for all people. If you follow- choice is involved. Not a single decision, but the ongoing decision to keep following. Implies that Jesus in on the move; not static or stationary. Neither will we be if we follow. Me- not a rule book or code of ethics. Not a religious tradition, or belief system. A person: Jesus the Christ! You wont be stumbling through the darkness- a promise. Believe him or not. Stumbling is something we understand. Weve all done it. Stubbed toes and bruised shins, or worse. Not knowing where were going or what obstacles are in our path. The key, of course, is that we are following him, not going our own way. We give up the imagined freedom of going our own way, and choose his way. Because you will have the light that leads to life.- not an empty, baseless promise, but one rooted in the reality of Gods presence with us... In us. Leading us. Enlightening us. Leading us to life! Prayer: True light of the world, shine on me, in me, through me. Lead me to life as I follow you.
