Lent Devotional Day 4 - Saturday, 3/8/14 Galatians 5:13-15 (NRSV) For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Philippians 2:5-7 (NLT) Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. Reflection: Slaves? Free to be a slave? Love slaves? How is this freedom? We tend to exalt individual freedom as the standard by which all else is measured. If something restricts individual freedom, it must be bad/ wrong/ unconstitutional/ un-American. However, true freedom in Christ enables me to be a servant, no, a SLAVE to others, as the passage from Galatians states. Where am I resisting the call of God to servant hood, to love-slavery? Am I truly following the one who emptied himself of all that was rightfully his, and became a slave? Prayer: Search me, oh Lord, and show me where I am resisting your call to slavery. Show me where I am making an idol out of what I call freedom. Teach me what freedom in Christ really is. Help me become the servant, the love-slave that is fully free. (Our next devotional will be on Monday.)
