Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle, has chosen to make public - TopicsExpress

Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle, has chosen to make public the fact that she is being treated for cancer. Lesley was diagnosed with a mild case of breast cancer in August as a result of a routine mammogram. As a result of this test, the cancer was detected at a very early stage, and following further tests an operation took place within two weeks which successfully removed the lump before the cancer had the chance to spread far. Because there were some signs of the cancer beginning to spread prior to that point, Lesley is now undergoing a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy as a precaution to ensure that any remaining traces of the cancer are killed off. Lesley is otherwise in good health, and is continuing to make public appearances at appropriate points in the chemotherapy cycle, while the rest of the Castle team are working hard to ensure that it is business as usual at Tutbury Castle. The prognosis is extremely good, and she is expected to make a full recovery, and doctors have given Lesley the go ahead to proceed with her wedding in early December. The reason that Lesley has chosen to make her condition public is to promote the importance of breast screening. Because Lesleys cancer was caught early in a routine test, it was possible to operate quickly before the cancer became more severe, requiring more severe treatment to deal with it. Many cancer victims suffer more than they need to because the cancer is only recognised at a much later date, and Lesley is keen to encourage people to make the most of the opportunity to get free breast screening from the NHS.
