Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love - TopicsExpress

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8 Credit cards have made it very easy for us to get into debt. People may not realize it until it’s too late when they see how badly in debt they are. They say that there’s two kinds of debts: bad debts and good debts. Bad debts are those you incur from purchasing items that will depreciate in value. Meanwhile, good debts are those that you incur from purchasing items that will appreciate in value. So it’s not wrong to get into debt as long as it’s the good kind. The Apostle Paul tells the Romans not to get into bad debt. Instead they ought to be in a continuing kind of good debt, one that doesn’t get paid off completely which is the debt to love one another. As cheesy as it may sound, loving another person is hardly mushy at all. It’s full of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Love was never meant to be an emotional word because love rarely involves the emotions alone. Love is a decision, a commitment to do what is best for the person. As unromantic and un-Hollywood-like as this definition may sound to you, it is nonetheless true. John 3:16 is probably the most popular verse in the Bible. Even those of us who rarely or never memorize verses can quote this, too. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” When Jesus said that God so loved the world, He didn’t say that God became emotional about it. He said that God gave because of His love for us. It wasn’t an invisible love, it was something that we could see. When He gave, God gave the best gift of all: His only begotten Son. And so when Jesus was being crucified, mocked, and ridiculed by the very creatures He had created, He was still able to say, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus was able to restrain Himself from exacting revenge because He had made a decision to love us from the very beginning. If love was based on emotion, then I’m quite sure that after angering God with our sins, none of us would be alive today. When you love someone, you’re saying that you have decided to do what is best for that person regardless of that person’s behavior and how you feel. Sometimes, love will cause you to give, to sacrifice, and to show patience. At other times, love will require that you be tough, withhold, and refrain. Love is manifested in different ways but at the heart of it is the desire to give the best. To whom do you owe this kind of love? You owe it to your family to love them this way. You owe it to your friends to love them like this. You owe it to the people you spend most of your time with, your subordinates, and yes, even your superiors. If love is a debt we owe one another, then it’s time that we started paying up today.
