Lets talk about appearances - some say first impressions are - TopicsExpress

Lets talk about appearances - some say first impressions are everything, others say dont judge a book by its cover. While I believe the latter is true, I also believe the first statement is what tends to happen. In the past weeks, I have seen many posts about the needed growth in our community and this ties in closely with appearances. I have also seen our city government website with misspellings of words my 10 year old can spell and horrible punctuation. Yesterday, a petition began circling to end Common Core education in our community - yet the writer of the petition was unable to use correct grammar or punctuation. This morning, while dropping Gavin at school, I noticed the large number of parents walking inside still wearing pajamas. These posts calling for county growth have made me more aware of the issues in our county. If a business leader looks into our county as a prospective location and sees many people in the community signing a petition that calls for the old form of education, yet is written with the grammar usage of a child; if a business leader checks out our citys webpage and sees that whomever is in charge of it cannot spell simple words; if a business leader goes to visit our schools and sees parents in pajamas what will that business leaders impression be? Will he or she believe that this is a community of educated folks ready to work or will he be more apt to think that this is a community of people lacking in the most elementary education and content to go with the flow? I believe he or she will see the latter because first impressions are everything. This post is not to put down anyone or judge. I believe that here in Lawrence county we have become complacent. We have accepted things as they are and not thought of how we are perceived by others in other parts of the country. Just go to Williamson county....look around and listen to conversations. Then come back here and do the same. The difference is obvious. We want to thrive like other counties, we do not want to be poor, uneducated, or behind the times yet the appearance we show to the outside world is that we are perfectly content just as we are. Bringing industry and businesses to this county is not just up to our elected officials, it is just as much up to us. We must give the business leaders the impression they are looking for, rather than expecting them to know, without knowing us, that we are a community who wants them here.
