Lighting festival will spread cheer across downtown Fitchburg Saturday FITCHBURG — On Saturday, the city’s Upper Common will transform into a festive, sparkling celebration of the holiday season. For the second year in a row, the Fitchburg Downtown Decorating Committee will host a lighting ceremony on the common. Geared toward local families and children, Saturday’s free event will feature a Main Street window-display contest, music, hot chocolate, and an appearance by Santa, who will light the common. “We’ve been working on this since May or so,” said Susan Navarre, the committee’s executive director. Along with Navarre, the Downtown Decorating Committee includes Chair Rocco Mammone, Joanna Rameau, Dolores Thibault-Muos, Bill McSheehy, Nate LaRose and Shirley Wagner. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Main Street, with residents enjoying the displays in business windows and voting for their favorite displays. Ballots can be picked up at the Fitchburg library, Navarre said, and turned back in to the library by 5:30 p.m. for tallying. Santa will then appear on the library roof, she said. “Santa will lead a parade of the kids up Main Street to the upper common, and we have music and hot chocolate, and he’ll light the lights.” This was Navarre’s favorite part of the event last year, she said. “When the kids all see Santa, and it may be snowing a little bit and he turns on the lights,” she said, “the lights under the snow are so pretty, and the kids get all excited that Christmas is really coming.” Other events on Saturday include a $5 pancake breakfast with Santa at the Senior Center from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., a $10 chili cookoff for lunch, and the $20 annual historical homes tour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from each of these events will go toward local organizations and charities.
