Like my family and me, Spiegelman was imprinted on MAD Magazine. I do get his point that even if the ideas expressed in cartoons are toxic, they are part of the ecosystem and need to be expressed. The important thing I think is that there is balance in the kind of ideas that are allowed to be expressed; in other words there should be equal-opportunity offense. And also the right to criticize those offenses. It should be a free-for-all.
