Links 8th graders visited the Montclair Art Museum recently to see the From Heart to Hand: African-American Quilts exhibit. The exhibit included 29 colorful and creatively designed quilts by African-American quilt makers, primarily of Western Alabama. Most were made between the mid-1950s and the end of the 20th century, and represent the major themes in traditional quilt making. Prior to the trip students received a preview of the exhibit so they would have some understanding and confidence in what they would see at the museum. During the visit, they created, and brought back with them, an original work of art and developed a broader knowledge of quilting, civil rights, and narrative art.
