Look at this adorable fluffball! This baby bird is a member of the Nightjar family, also called Goatsuckers...dont recognize those? Have you ever heard of the whip-poor-will?? Its a Nightjar too. This birds a Chuck-wills-widow or a Common Nighthawk, hard to identify this young. Nightjars are active at night (the Nighthawk is out at dusk and dawn too) and eat insects, usually swooping down on them mid-flight. Nightjars have exceptional camouflage and spend the day sitting unmoved on branches on in leaf litter, waiting for nightfall. They have huge mouths that can snap open and closed in an instant, perfect for catching insects. And since they sometimes sit in open areas waiting for insects, people thought they were drinking the milk from cows or goats...hence the name Goatsucker! However, they were only attracted to the insects that hung around the livestock.
