Looking for some helpful advice from the group!......I have started showing my working shetland this year and after an excitable start where we always got put down the line due to his spirited and entertaining behaviour he started to get it and has been placed in the top 3 of all classes entered (1st in a class of 17 at one point). Thing is he is 6yrs old and NEVER worn a bit (which was my choice) he pulls a cart and works in my business Mini Pony Hire and I never feel the need to have more control over him and he does everything asked of him..... At the weekend we attended our 1st County level show and the judge put us last....which is fair enough if he hadnt been so well behaved or either of us did anything incorrectly BUT the reason I was given is ......... he should be in a proper bridle (I show in an inhand bridle with the chain attached to the cheek pieces) and he should be wearing a bit for more control!! (I refuse to use a bit when I dont want or need to!!! So is there a nice leather bitless bridle out there which would fit a shetland and look similar to a normal bridle just without the bit? If winning higher level shows means I have to put a bit in I will resign myself to being a loser safe in the knowledge that my pony is happy and better behaved......Ill still enter the classes though just to prove a point that we will not change what we do just because that is what is expected.
