Lorenzo Stoccos post below about IDing his lithops got me thinking (here I go again!) about dichotomous keys for lithops. Do collectors not use keys because they have proven unreliable? Or are they too unwieldy? Apparently, there is so much variability within a lithops species AND the keys that have been developed are dependent on having access to a full life cycle of plant material, i.e. flower, seed capsule, turgid leaves) that using a key isnt a certain way of IDing lithops anyway. I have been studying Jonathan Clarks revised key from 2010 (I believe first published in Bradleya 14 [1996]) and now have enough plant material to try it out—it is supposed to be pretty good. Also I have been reading about Desmond Coles monumental lithograph from 1988, and would love to see it, but have not yet located a source. Any thoughts about dichotomous keys for identifying our weird little plants?
