Lucas John Lucas, 94, of Poughkeepsie died on June 26, 2013 at Vassar Hospital from heart failure after struggling with brain injury since January. Lucas was born on September 28, 1918 in Poughkeepsie to John N. Lucas and Mary Shaheen Lucas. He was the oldest of six siblings, and was married to Zahia NeJame Lucas in 1956. He attended Nativity Elementary School and Poughkeepsie Trade School. Lucas ...began his love for mechanical work in his youth, first working alongside his father in the family locksmith business; then he worked at Fargo and Delaval as a machine operator and IBM from 1942-1975 as a tool and model maker. Lucas was proud of his military service from 1942-46 in the Seabees 136th Navy Construction Battalion where he served in the Pacific. He was known for his hobbies of bee keeping; hunting & fishing; small aircraft pilot; ham radio; photography; and gardening. Lucas was a life-time member of the Millbrook Rod & Gun Club, a member of Viola Rod & Gun Club, and was awarded honorary Commander 2001-02 from the 136th Navy Seabee Association. Lucas was proud of his Lebanese heritage and his faith, especially his roots in the Maronite Catholic Church. Lucas is survived by his son John, daughter Sister Marla Marie, daughter Jane Lucas Wait and her husband Chris, daughter Carol Lucas Ngoh and her husband Francis, and his son Michael. His beloved grandchildren: George, Julian, Sonya, Martin, Stefan. His sister Bertha Adsmond of Poughkeepsie, and brother Joseph Lucas, proprietor of John N. Lucas & Son locksmith business in Poughkeepsie, as well as, many beloved nieces and nephews. Lucas is predeceased by his dear wife, Zahia Nejame Lucas, December 12, 1990, and his sister Ruth Lucas, Sara Lucas, Mary Lucas Connors. Lucas will be buried from Our Lady of Rosary Chapel of St. Peter’s Parish, 299 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 on Monday, July 1 at 10:00AM. Fr. Jack Morrison will officiate. Viewing will be on Saturday June 29th from 3:00PM to7:00PM at Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Burial will be at Saint Peter’s Cemetery. Memorial and Mass donations in memory of Lucas can be sent to his daughter’s convent, Maronite Servants of Christ the Light, 856 Tucker Road, Dartmouth MA 02747. Lucas will be dearly remembered for his devotion to family, extended family, friends, and faith.
