Lupita Nyongo Is Kenyas First Bet Award Winner By Elly Gitau, Source: The Star HOLLYWOOD sensation Lupita Nyongo made history yet again as she became the first Kenyan to ever win a Black Entertainment (BET) award. During this years award ceremony held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday night, the 31-year-old actress, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress this year for her role in the critically-lauded drama 12 Years a Slave, won the Best Actress award for her starring portrayal as Patsey in the film. She beat other nominees including Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington. Lupita was not in attendance to receive her trophy at the star-studded show thats widely considered as the premiere African-American ceremony of each year. Nigerias music superstar Davido won the Best International Act- Africa, to make two wins for the continent. Lupitas co-star in the 12 Years a Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor was named the Best Actor. The movie itself scooped the Best Movie award after beating The Best Man Holiday, Fruitvale Station, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain and Lee Daniels The Butler.
