MAMBO’S STAR STUDDED NATIONAL DRAFT Moutonshoek’s promising young stallion, Mambo In Seattle, is well represented by a classy draft of well bred yearlings on the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. The 2008 Gr1 Travers Stakes runner up has 17 lots on offer, and they include some really well bred individuals. A full list of Mambo’s National Sale yearlings are listed at the bottom of this article. Currently South Africa’s third leading first crop sire (by prize money), Mambo In Seattle has made a pleasing start with his first crop of juveniles this season. From just a handful of runners, Mambo In Seattle has been represented by four horses who either won or have finished in the money. These include impressive recent debut winner The Royal Rumba, himself a R400 000 buy at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. Mambo is also South Africa’s joint leading first crop sire by winners –tied with Seventh Rock and A P Answer. A stakes winning son of Kingmambo, Mambo In Seattle is a three parts brother to leading US sire, Lemon Drop Kid – the sire of 72 stakes winners. North America’s Champion Older Male Horse of 2000, Lemon Drop Kid’s stakes winners include eight grade one winners. An emerging broodmare sire, Lemon Drop Kid is also the damsire of Gr1 winners Lochte and Elusive Kate. He is also the damsire of 2014’s leading Kentucky Oaks hopeful, Unbridled Forever. Mambo in Seattle’s 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale draft: Lot 26 is a colt whose dam, by champion broodmare sire Fort Wood, was placed in the Oaks. Inbred to the great mare Special, this unnamed colt is out of a half-sister to the smart, stakes winning juvenile Berlusconi and is from a family choc-a-bloc with black type winners. Lot 57 is a filly, who is out of a Fort Wood half-sister to Oaks winner Studio Fifty Four. The latter is also an extremely successful broodmare, having produced Gr1 Gold Cup winner Jeppe’s Reef and Gr3 Algoa Cup hero Disco Al. Lot 65 is a half-brother to recent feature race winner Star Jet. Named Seven League Boots, this colt is out of a mare bred on the highly successful Mutakddim/Southern Halo cross, and he hails from an outstanding Argentinian family to boot. Lot 83 is colt out of mare by champion sire and exceptional broodmare sire Rainbow Quest. His dam is a half-sister to Irish St Leger winner and champion Strategic Choice, and this is the immediate family of US legends, Spain and Shuvee, to name a few. Lot 102 is a colt whose dam is a full-sister to a stakes placed winner. His second dam is a stakes winning daughter of Western Winter – who is a full-sister to multiple Gr1 winner Set Afire, and who is also a close relation of current star Red Ray. Lot 123 is a colt, whose dam is a seven time stakes winning daughter of champion sire Silvano. Named Seattle Swing, this colt is from a top Normandy family, whose members include outstanding filly Captain’s Gal – winner of the Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint. Lot 145 is a unnamed colt, who is intensely inbred to the great mare Lassie Dear (ancestress of Mambo In Seattle and the colt’s damsire Wolfhound). His second dam is a stakes winning half-sister to Gr1 winner Basic Instinct, and this is a colt for the notebook. Lot 161 is a filly who goes by the name of Lingerie. She is out of the stakes winning mare Alinga, herself a daughter of champion racehorse and outstanding sire Rock Of Gibraltar. She hails from the same family as outstanding Australian galloper Naturalism and has a real international pedigree. Lot 176 is a colt whose Gr3 placed dam is a three parts sister to champion Princess Victoria, who won four Gr1 races during her career. This is the same family as former champion sire Jallad. Lot 204 is a filly named Torchman. Like champion Vercingetorix, she is out of a mare by National Assembly. This filly’s dam won five and is a half-sister to three black type performers. Lot 226 is a beautifully bred colt, who goes by the name of Kentucky Prince. His dam is Fort Wood’s multiple stakes winning daughter Cinnamon Sugar, and this is the family of Gr1 winner Michaelmas. Lot 288 is a half-sister to 3 winners, including the high-class stakes winner Taipan. Inbred to Special, the filly on offer is out of a half-sister to the dam of star filly, Yoshie, a champion last season. Lot 327 is a colt whose dam is a half-sister to G1 Falmouth Stakes winner Rajeem. In turn, this well bred colt’s second dam is a full-sister to ill-fated Prix Morny winner Hoh Magic. He is another sporting a serious pedigree! Lot 343 is a filly whose dam is a Var half-sister to the flying filly Rosinante. She is from a great family, whose members include Irish 2000 Guineas hero Roderic O’Connor. Lot 465 is a half-brother to five winners, two of whom are black type performers. His dam is by the wonderful Miswaki – broodmare sire of such superstars as Sea The Stars, Galileo, Hernando and Dr Fong. Lot 496 is a colt who has been named Border Hopper. He is out of a Fort Wood half-sister to the top-class mare Dash For Gretna and hails from the famous Let Kiss family, responsible for last season’s Equus Champion 2yo Colt, Kochka. Lot 512 is a half-sister to last season’s Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery. A filly with huge paddock value, her Fort Wood sired dam is a full-sister to ill-fated G1 performer Service Ace, and a half-sister to another ill-fated star, Cape Guineas winner Flight Alert.
