MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 58 STAY (I MISSED YOU)–LISA LOEB & NINE STORIES (#1, 1994, Reality Bites) Stay (I Missed You) made history when it hit No. 1 in the summer of 1994. It made Lisa Loeb (born May 11, 1968, in Bethesda, Md.) the first artist to attain a No. 1 song without being signed to a record label. So how was she able to get a No. 1 song this way? She wrote the song in 1990 and recorded it with her new band Nine Stories for her co-producer Juan Patino. Three years later in New York where she was living, actor, neighbor and friend Ethan Hawke heard about Loebs song and she played it for him. Hawke took the demo she recorded to his friend, Ben Stiller, who had just casted him as slacker Troy Dyer in the movie he was directing called Reality Bites, which also starred Winona Ryder, Janeane Garofalo and Steve Zahn as young 20-somethings trying to get by in Houston. And once it was figured that Stay (I Missed You) would be used for the movie after being placed on the RCA-based soundtrack, Hawke came back to Loeb and told her he wanted to direct her music video for the song (below). And America perked up and listened to the song and bought the cassette single, sending it to No. 1 even though Loeb was not signed to a record deal. That all changed when she signed to Geffen Records and she recorded her first CD in 1995 called Tails. But it all started with her association with an actor just making a film who took an interest in a song she recorded. This is the second song in this countdown from Reality Bites after Big Mountains Baby I Love Your Way at No. 226. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
