MEANT TO BE? We were home in Milan in July of 1989, staying with Lindas brother, Jerry Jones, on the far end of Park Avenue. We ate lunch at Bobs Grill. After lunch, I got into the passenger side of the car. When Linda got in, for some reason unknown to me, I said, I think Ill walk. , I was recovering from major back surgery and was still wearing a steel back brace. After some deliberation she said O.K. and let me go. I wasnt sure I could make the walk all the way but was pretty sure I could catch a ride with someone if I couldnt. Didnt realize who that someone would be. I walked over to Main Street and started towards downtown. Walked until I got to the middle of downtown and turned toward Park Avenue. I crossed the 4 lane, but instead of walking up Park Avenue, I walked over to East Jackson Street, down road past the Water Department yard and turned up Keaton Street. I passed the lot where my Uncle James Bullington and his wife, Mozelle had lived, and came to the lot where my grandmother, Annie B Bullington, and various boarders over the years had lived. I walked around her large yard remembering what had been there and things that had happened. I was in the back of the yard when a car turned into the driveway. Thinking this couldnt be, I started trying to identify license plates state of issue as it turned around. IT WAS! Missouri. I tried to follow the car with my awkward limp. It turned on Smith Street but then into my grand aunt, Erna Greers driveway! I had caught up by then and saw my first cousin from Missouri, Mickey Hedrick and her husband, Bob. I had not seen her in many years. They were passing through Milan on their way to Nashville. Erna (I called all of my aunts and uncles by their first name except my mothers sister and her husband) was home from work for lunch. We had a wonderful get together before she had to get back to work. Mickey and I decided we wanted to call on our great grand aunt, Pauline Keaton. She almost always attended Thanksgiving dinner at my grand aunt Berthas house when we were kids. Went looking for her. Saw Coach Tucker(married to our 3rd cousin) in his driveway. He told us she was in the Milan Hospital and not doing well. We went to see her. Wasnt expecting her to recognize us, but she did, especially Mickey. Had a short visit with her. Mickey and Bob, dropped me off at Jerrys house and headed for Nashville. Annie Pauline Peany Keaton died 10 days after our visit. Erna Vawter Greer was hit and killed by a car as she crossed the 4 lane on her way to or from work in May of 1993. Both Erna and Pauline were 99 years young at their deaths. David (Tommy) Bullington
