MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE To: All media Date: 14 July 2013 Two senior police officers suspended Pretoria – Further to the media statement issued on 10 July 2013, regarding the wide-ranging investigation into the Central Firearm Registry, the South African Police Service can confirm the suspension of two senior members. Brigadier Mathapelo Merriam Mangwane, Section Head: Central Firearm Registry, and Brigadier Hlamane Elias Mahlabane, Section Head: Firearm Compliance, were suspended from duty effective today (14 July 2013) for their involvement in corrupt activities. Another employee, an Administration Clerk, has been issued with a letter of intention to suspend her. She has been given until 17 July 2013 to make representation as to why she should not be suspended. "This is extremely disappointing, as the people who have been suspended are the ones who were given the responsibility of cleaning up the Central Firearm Registry, with the clear objective of eliminating all corrupt activities. Now they stand accused of the very same thing that they were employed to stamp out,” said Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, SAPS Head of Communications. The investigations are continuing and the possibility of disciplinary, as well as criminal action, against other employees cannot be ruled out. For ease of reference, below is the statement issued on 10 July 2013. ENDS Enquiries: Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale 082 778 3718
