MEMA issued update on weather conditions. Snow totals appear less than previously forecasted but still in 18-24 inch range. Main problems are high winds and flooding caused by high tides and storm surges along the coast, including Hull and parts of Hingham and Cohasset. Scituate residents along coastal roads have been hit hard, and a portion of the seawall in neighboring Marshfield collapsed. Snow accumulations • Adjusted snow totals overnight. Now have less, mainly a 8 to 14 inches from the Berkshires to the CT valley, 20-30 inches from CT through central and NE MA and SE MA. RI is expected to see mainly 18 to 24 inches. • Will continue to see 3-4 inch per hour snowfall rates this morning. However, these will likely drop off somewhat this afternoon and evening. Coastal Flooding • Coastal Flood Warning continues for late afternoon high tide cycle. • May need one more Coastal Flood Advisory for the Wednesday AM high tide. • This will most likely be a “Top 5 ” snowfall record for most locations with widespread 20 to 30 inches...less on outer Cape Cod and Nantucket. 3 to 5 foot snow drifts. • 3”-4”/hour snowfall rates at times through noon, with isolated thunder snowfall rates decreasing through the afternoon and evening. • Strong wind gusts, near hurricane force possible, through mid day on Cape Ann, Cape Cod and Nantucket this morning. • Very strong winds in eastern MA and RI through the evening, with gusts to 50-65 mph • Widespread downed trees/utility poles with power possibly out for several days in some areas • Moderate to localized Major coastal flooding. Structures vulnerable to coastal flooding will suffer significant damage for this afternoon’s high tide. • Wind chills will drop below zero tonight across Western MA/CT – could need wind chill advisories.
