MIQDASH - SANCTUARY Isaiah 8:14 (MSG) 14 The Holy can be either a Hiding Place or a Boulder blocking your way, The Rock standing in the willful way of both houses of Israel, A barbed-wire Fence preventing trespass to the citizens of Jerusalem. (TLB) 14 He will be your safety; but Israel and Judah have refused his care and thereby stumbled against the Rock of their salvation and lie fallen and crushed beneath it: God’s presence among them has endangered them! (NCV) 14 Then he will be a place of safety for you. But for the two families of Israel, he will be like a stone that causes people to stumble, like a rock that makes them fall. He will be like a trap for the people of Jerusalem, and he will catch them in his trap. (KJV) 14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Different words are used to design a sanctuary: holy of holies, sanctum sanctorum - (Judaism) sanctuary comprised of the innermost chamber of the Tabernacle in the temple of Solomon where the Ark of the Covenant was kept Tabernacle - (Judaism) a portable sanctuary in which the Jews carried the Ark of the Covenant on their exodus place, property - any area set aside for a particular purpose; who owns this place?; the president was concerned about the property across from the White House As our sanctuary Christ is our Hiding Place, a place of safety, a sacred place, a holy place. The Lord, who will be a Sanctuary to those who trust in him, will be a Stone of stumbling, and a Rock of offence, to those who make the creature their fear and their hope. If the things of God be an offence to us, they will undo us. The apostle quotes this as to all who persisted in unbelief of the gospel of Christ,. The crucified Emmanuel, who was and is a Stumbling-stone and Rock of offence to unbelieving Jews, is no less so to thousands who are called Christians. The preaching of the cross is foolishness in their esteem; his doctrines and precepts offend them. As our Sanctuary Christ is a sure refuge to all that truly fear Him, and rely upon him. He will defend you who are His elect, and reject all the rest, meaning Christ against whom the Jews would stumble and fall,. The Messiah, is for a sanctuary, or asylum, a place of refuge for His people in all times of distress, and who is their dwelling place in all generations; He dwells in them, and they dwell in Him; and where they dwell safely and securely, peaceably and quietly, comfortably and pleasantly, and that always; He is a sanctuary to worship in, in whom they draw nigh to the Father, and offer up the sacrifices of prayer and praise, and where the glory of God is seen by them, and they have communion with him; or for sanctification, as the Septuagint version; this Christ is to His people. He is an inviolable asylum, like the altar of the temple namely, to those who fear and trust in Him.
