MONDAY, January 19 The Confession of Saint Peter the Apostle (tr) Matthew 16:15 [Jesus] said to them, “But who do you say I am?” It was the practice of our bishop to ask those seeking ordination: Who is Jesus for you? He did not ask it once, but at each interview along the path to ordination: as an inquirer, again when a postulant, when a candidate, and at the time of final approval for ordination. How a person answered that question became a guide to how he or she would answer all of our other questions, and how they were with people in general. Was Jesus a buddy? A severe judge? A mediator? And was the understanding of Jesus alive, evolving as the process went on? Or was Jesus always the same, as if still dead? One memorable postulant said Jesus was a troublemaker. She said her life was just fine, thank you. She was happily married with a good job, her children were succeeding in school. Then bam! Jesus showed up and told her he wanted her to be a priest, turning her whole life upside down. Finally, in a moving monologue for a candidate, she described how Jesus had become her mentor. She was learning about peacemaking and mediation. She was amazed by who she was becoming. PRAY for the Diocese of Lincoln (Canterbury, England) Today the Church remembers The Confession of Saint Peter the Apostle. Ps 23; Acts 4:8-13; 1 Peter 5:1-4; Matthew 16:13-19
