MOURINHO HONOURED IN HOMELAND Jose Mourinho has been named Coach of the Century at the Portuguese Football Federation’s 100th anniversary celebration. Mourinho flew out to Lisbon on Wednesday for the ceremony, which was held in Estoril in front of a star-studded audience, returning in time to lead training at Cobham on Thursday morning. ‘It is a big honour to be recognised as the best coach in Portuguese football history,’ Mourinho told chelseafc. ‘After becoming a European champion with Porto, I left my country but during these 12 years in England, Italy and Spain I always felt the responsibility to represent Portuguese football and the people of my country. So I am very honoured and I am ready to try and write more history at Chelsea.’ Mourinho began his managerial career in his native country with Benfica in 2000, having been an assistant to Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona. After leaving Benfica he turned around the fortunes of Uniao de Leiria before rising to international prominence in charge at Porto, securing successive league titles as well as the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. He arrived for his first spell at Stamford Bridge following that Champions League success in 2004, lifting back-to-back league titles in London, adding an FA Cup and two League Cups. Having departed in 2007, Jose added two Serie A titles and another Champions League while with Inter, before winning Spain’s La Liga in charge of Real Madrid in 2012, a feat which made him the first manager to win league titles in four of Europe’s top leagues. Mourinho was also named the inaugural FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2010, adding to a string of continental and national awards picked up during his career.
