MOVIE MATTERS AMERICA - 5/10 Tonight I wanted to see a movie, and I wanted to see it with my friend, Mark. I knew that Meant I couldnt see 22 JUMP STREET, because Mark doesnt appreciate that caliber of comedy, so I read him the description of AMERICA and he agreed to do. It co-stars Barack Obama for cryin out loud. How bad can it be??? But of course I now realize that Obama was at best a reluctant castmember and probably wishes this movie didnt exist. What I didnt realize when I bought my ticket, was that writer/director/star Dinesh DSouza, was the brotha-from-a-conservative-motha to Michael Moore. In fact, MM appears more than once in Souzas new film. This film is billed as a documentary, but in fact, its propaganda, which leads me to want to call it a new genre of filmmaking... the DOCUGANDARY (TM?). I first became suspicious (SPOILER ALERT) when an early scene depicted Barack giving his flubbed-and-cleverly-edited-by-FOX News-in-a-way-that-re-wrote-what-he-said-so-the-republicans-could-build-a-campaign-and-wrote/sing-a-pageant-around-it You didnt build it speech. Because I naively assumed anyone overtly questioning Americas role in history/the world as being a Liberal, I was convinced hed inadvertantly used the wrong footage. Rather than tell what actually went down, DSouza used the bogus footage that 38 percent of the American people think actually happened! But it didnt take long to realize Id stumbled into a right-wing Obama-bash that would drag on for just shy of 2 hours. As Mark astutely pointed out regarding the uber-long opening credits, Its effective and compelling footage to show a blacksmith pounding the word, AMERICA out of iron, but does that mean they had to do it in real time! But I think the meanest trick of all was ending the movie with a sort of country version of the star-spangled banner as final credits rolled... forever. Because 1 hour and 43 minutes was enough for me and I was determined to leave. Leaving of course meant I would be forced to walk out of the theater, in front of a hundred exuberant patriots whod clapped vigorously at the end of the film, while joking with Mark about what wed just seen. Nothing makes you stand out as a potential domestic threat fasgter than talking in a theater using your outside voice while the national anthem is blasting through Dolby surround sound speakers. So your real question is probably something like, So should I see it??? to which my answer is, Yes. If you are conservative, youre likely to enjoy this movie b/c it preaches to the converted and youre in the choir! If youre a Liberal you should go see this movie because you owe it to yourself and others to learn how the other half thinks.
