MOZAMBIQUE AND CHINA SIGN AGREEMENT ON FISHING PORT Maputo, 10 Sept (AIM) - The Mozambican and Chinese governments signed an agreement in Maputo on Wednesday for financing the rehabilitating the fishing port in the central city of Beira. The agreement, signed by Finance Minister Manuel Chang and the Chinese ambassador, Li Chanhua, is a necessary step towards an agreement between the Mozambican government and the Chinese Eximbank on a soft loan for 120 million US dollars. This agreement falls within the scope of the Mozambican governments priority projects for the period 2013-2015, which were submitted to the Chinese government for financing, said Chang, after the signing ceremony. He added that the rehabilitation of the Beira fishing port will stimulate the economy of central Mozambique, and particularly of Sofala province. When the work was complete, the port will handle 70,000 tonnes of fishery produce a year, he predicted. The rehabilitation would create new jobs, and increase the ports freezing and storage capacity. For his part, Li said the agreement opens good prospects for the fishing port. We hope the two sides can speed up the preparatory work so as to implement as rapidly as possible the expansion of this fishing port, he declared.
