MSU - QS NEWS UPDATE..............FYI 7th QS WorldClass PRESS RELEASE April 11, 2014 7th QS WorldClass—Gathering of World’s University Leaders—concludes in Johannesburg, South Africa The 7th QS WorldClass seminar was held from March 31–April 2 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was a great success convening university leaders from 42 institutions in 24 countries across the globe to exchange their valuable knowledge, learn from the discussions and presentations, and network in a relaxed atmosphere. University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was QS’s organizing partner in this prestigious event. The 24 countries represented in the seminar were Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zimbabwe. South Africa’s Ministry of Higher Education and Training representative, Professor Nan Yeld, opened the seminar with a lecture on the quality of higher education in South Africa and what universities can do to be recognized globally. A multitude of other notable speakers also gave enlightening presentations on topics like ASEAN’s global engagement and faculty recruitment. It is worth noting that this year’s seminar premiered a newly conceived QS rankings system—QS University Rankings: Arab World. The session was intended to engage university leaders in determining the indicators that would be forming the rankings criteria. The second phase of the workshop will be conducted during the 4th QS-MAPLE—to be held from May 6–8, 2014, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. “This being my first time at QS WorldClass, I got to know the current status of QS ranking criteria and its future prospective as well as different globalization strategies,” said Prof R A Attalage, deputy vice chancellor of University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Another delegate, Lesiba Seshoka from UKZN, expressed his satisfaction “The conference opened ones eyes with reference to issues of ranking a reputation.” QS WorldClass seminars carry on the QS tradition of creating events that help emerging universities in developing nations learn from speakers from developed nations and also share knowledge on the challenges of achieving global recognition. The 8th QS WorldClass seminar next year will be co-organized by Mahasarakham University in Phuket, Thailand.
