MULKEYTOWN -- John O. Whittington, 85, passed away May 8, 2014, in Mount Vernon. He was born July 2, 1928, in West Frankfort, the son of Arthur and Velma (Cockrum) Whittington. He married Earlene (Odom) on July 17, 1954, in Benton. She preceded him in death April 27, 2014. They would have soon celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. Whittington was a retired farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War, and a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Benton. Mr. Whittington is survived by children, Doris Cook and husband, Gary, of Benton, Jan Myers and husband, Steve, of Columbus, Ohio, Joy Habeeb and husband, Habeeb, of Champaign, Jeff Whittington and wife, Tana, of Benton, Kevin Whittington and wife, Sharyl, of Momence, Ron Whittington and wife, Denise, of Bourbonnais; daughter-in-law, Judy Whittington of Sesser; 15 grandchildren, Brian Whittington and wife, Alisha, Brandon Whittington and wife, Pixie, Amy Cook, Amber Brayfield and husband, Billy, Craig Cook and wife, Emilee, Paul Habeeb, Hannah Habeeb, Zachary Whittington, John Whittington and wife, Stacy, Jeffrey Whittington and wife, Lacie, David Whittington, Claire Whittington, Emerson Whittington, Parker Whittington, Ainsley Whittington; two great-grandchildren, Eldon and Ella Brayfield; one sister, Roberta Channell of Winthrop Harbor; one brother, Jerry Whittington and wife, Rosalie, of Tamaroa. Mr. Whittington was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Randy Whittington; one grandson, Jacob Daniel Whittington; three sisters, Mildred Hill, Mary Lou Bradley and Ila Gibbons and three brothers, Kenneth, Noel and Charles Whittington. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, in First Church of the Nazarene in Benton, with the Rev. Steve Shotts officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. For those who wish, memorials in Mrs. Whittingtons memory may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, P.O. Box 369, Benton, IL 62812. Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
