MUSIC Sitting on the front porch swing on a warm and breezy day. New spring leaves of varied shades of green are dappled with sunlight as rays break free and scatter the lawn with drops of light. The grandkids are playing, rolling and running in the yard, laughing and giggling. Sometimes they make animal sounds. Birds flit through chirping and an orchestra of melodies melt like candy in the air. Red cardinals, blue jays, orange orioles, cedar waxwings, nut hatches, goldfinch and mockingbirds add color as well as song to the garden. Bees buzz softly around azaleas, gladiolas, quince and other flowers. The sweet smell of roses mingles with the scents of honeysuckle and sassafras. Two hummingbirds dance before my eyes. More laughter and the sound of footsteps up the stairs. Come and play with us, Grandpa ! My wife comes out on the porch. I thought you were going to listen to music, she says. That is just what I am doing, dear, as I wave my hands to the beautiful day. Why dont you join me ? I pat the bench of the swing beside me. She smiles and sits down. Music.
