Maasai women from eight Maasai clans in Kajiado yesterday said they are on strike until the government repeals the Female Genital Mutilation Act which prohibits what has for far too long they have practiced. This, they say will allows them to circumcise their daughters. The women argued that they are not going to force their girls to undergo the cut but they should be allowed to make choices. Their leader, Esther Shapashina, said it is taboo for a Maasai woman to give birth be- fore undergoing the cut. She said the government has infringed the rights of the Maasai by introducing laws that go against their traditions. It is only a month ago that The Director of Public Prosecution Office ordered arrest and prosecution of a chief in Narok South for backing female circumcision. - See more at:naroknewspaper.co.ke
