Make whatever arguments you want about how in American football replays slow the game down, the bottom line is that having a 5th official in the booth there to strictly watch replay would end diving forever. Hed simply speak into the headset the referee is already wearing anyhow and tell him it was a dive. Then, the referee would simply present the diver with a yellow card. As soon as that happened once, youd never see diving again. My friends that are soccer purists think that diving is part of the game and that Americans make too big of a deal about it. But as someone that refereed for 15 years and also doubles as an NFL fan (one of those rare people that can like both brands of football), I dont see any way that having a referee in the booth for extreme circumstances would ever slow down or tarnish the game. Diving drives people away from soccer, and as this match today shows, it decides World Cup matches.
