Making sure your horses have enough water in the winter - TopicsExpress

Making sure your horses have enough water in the winter or...keeping water troughs from freezing. It can be a daunting task, not to mention a full-time occupation. Yesterday afternoon I took a large trough, put manure and boards in the bottom, then placed a smaller trough on the boards. Then I filled the large trough with manure. I added water to the small inside tank and covered it with an old canvas horse blanket for the night; the temperature was 5 degrees F. This morning there was a very thin film of ice that didnt cover the entire surface - Success! You can see a little bit of ice in the picture. The horses were a little worried about it, so I put grain in a floating feeder and let each one eat the grain. Pictures - see the pictures. Then, check out this DIY link for instructions on building solar trough, which I will be doing on New Years day.
