#Malawi submits list of development programmes to #China Lilongwe, October 17, 2014: President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika on Thursday submitted a new list of development programmes to the People’s Republic of China. This follows a meeting which was held between the two countries at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. Speaking to journalists, Mutharika said Malawi and China have had a fruitful relationship for the past seven years and that it was not strange that the nations wanted to further deepen their bilateral ties through the implementation of developmental projects. The President said the list submitted follows a successful completion of the five projects that the Chinese Government had promised to do in the country for the past five years. “Today, I’m happy to announce to the Malawi nation that I had a meeting with delegation from the People’s Republic of China. During our interaction, we have discussed a number of projects that as a nation we would like the Chinese Government to help. “Among the agreed projects include the Greenbelt initiative in the agricultural sector, exchange of teachers and learning materials in the area of education as well as exchange expertise in the heath sector,” Mutharika said. The President cited the new stadium in Lilongwe, Bingu International Conference Centre, Presidential Villas as well as the New Parliament Building as some of the projects that were promised and have been completed. Mutharika also disclosed that the Chinese Government promised to help the country deal with Ebola as well as completely eradicate malaria. “China dealt with Malaria some years ago and looking at Malawi’s challenge to deal with the problem they have offered to help,” he said. The two nations also promised to run exchange programmes in the areas of human resource, politics, civil society and media. During the meeting, the Chinese delegation presented a grant of about US$25 million. Zhang Ming, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, said China plans to double its trade investment to Malawi from US$40 million to US$250 million. Ming said Malawi is one of the countries China has confidence in and that Malawians are hardworking and enthusiastic. “During the seven years we have been in bilateral relationship with Malawi, we have seen the need to strengthen our cooperation by among other things develop the agricultural sector and improve participation in the social economic development of the two countries,” Ming said.
