Many of us would have seen news clips telecast by all important Television Net Works, showing the demonstration of Earthquake Ressistant model house developed and tested by Japanese Scientists. They have placed a plastic net inbetween brick walls and its cement plastering of both interior and exterior surfaces of the walls.The scientists conducted stimulated vibration tests with the help of Shake Table Equipment. The tests proved that conventional model house got collapsed and Plastic Net Reinforced Model House withstood the test succesfully without getting damaged. Though the news clipping ended within a short time, we could notice an Additional Footing Feature provided in the bottom corners of the Quake Ressistant building, which was not there in the collapsed one. If our observations are relevant / right, the success could be more attributed to the Additional Footing Technique, supplemented by the Plastic Net Reinforcement. But the scientist, in his demo, emphazized the merit of the Plastic Net Reinforcement alone and not mentioned any thing about Additional Footing. Approximately 5 to 6% Additional Footing Feature only provided in the model which sustained Vibration test. If 100% provided, not even a small damage can happen to the structure. We can also conduct such Shake Table Experiments with and without additional footing features and identify / quantify the goodness of the technique.We have all needed infrastructure including the shake table, the very costly equipment to conduct the tests, at our Structural Engineering Research Centers established by Human Resources Department of our Central Government. Budgetory requirement also will be highly negligible to conduct the tests. Research Center Administration and our scientists there should come forward open mindedly, to test this very practical / viable technique. If we reconcile the mankind’s struggles in facing many challenges in various problems, and its glorious victories / achievements, we will realize that this shake table experiment is too small one to do. We don’t foresee any failure in this attempt. Our scientists’ success will be remembered & thankfully acknowledged till the earth exists.
