Many people know my father was the Mayor of Phoenix in the 70s and has done a lot of work preserving the Rosson House and Tovrea Castle, but many dont know one of his greatest accomplishments: He was the founding Chairman of Second Harvest, which is now known as Feeding America and is the third largest charitable organizations in the United States. As a result of his work with food banks, President Reagan appointed him to his Task Force on Hunger. Reagan greatly appreciated my fathers tireless and successful efforts, and we have several letters between the two of them. I am attaching a letter Reagan wrote my father congratulating him for a successful year in which they donated 100 million pounds of food in 1983. Under my fathers leadership, 280 million pounds of food were donated to the poor and needy. I am also attaching the telegram that Reagan sent my father when he stepped down as Chairman. Reagan said that my fathers leadership has indeed made a difference. Second Harvest presented my father a large framed resolution, which listed his accomplishments leading that organization. Most people I speak to are not aware of his role in creating Feeding America. To me, this is just another quiet example of my fathers positive impact in serving and helping others.
