Many people tend to dumb down competitive gaming to who can push more buttons faster and more accurately. Even unintentionally people do this when you assume the things you practice on your own time equate to competitive skill. Competitive Gaming isnt just regurgitating the combos and inputs youve mastered on your couch. Its an elaborate combination of adapting to a human opponent and figuring out how/why they do what they do and how to counteract it. While this whole mental war is going on, you need to be able to tune out the crowd behind you whether theyre cheering for or against you. Even the smallest off hand comments about something you or your opponent does could throw you off. The reason why tournaments exist is so that people can prove their skill outside of their own comfort zone. Anyone with enough time can master a combo at home, but it takes a real player to implement what theyve learned face to face.
