Many social democrats hold up Saskatchewan and Manitoba as examples of good governance by NDP governments over the years. Yet there are still critics on the Left that would say that the problem comes from the NDP abandoning its principles and having become too centrist in their thinking. But Sellingers downfall argues otherwise. By breaking a promise not to raise taxes- even if is only a single percentage point- he violated a key centrist value: fiscal accountability. And if the voters cannot trust you on economic matters, it doesnt matter what else you believe in.
