Mark Prince: Using Personal Tragedy To Help Britain’s Youth & Prevent Knife Crime Former professional boxer Mark Prince has had a tumultuous life; full of success and personal achievement and yet marred by much tragedy. When Mark was a teenager, he ended up homeless and on the wrong path, involved in criminal activity and gang life, yet he turned his life around through boxing and in 1995 signed a professional contract with renowned promoter Frank Warren. He went on to become International IBF and WBO Champion and win many fights, however tragedy struck when his 15-year-old son Kiyan was fatally stabbed to death after he stepped into to defend a friend who was being bullied in 2006. Kiyan, like his father, was a promising sports star, playing for QPR’s under-16s and admired and respected by his peers. His tragic and untimely death made a huge impact on so many and that is what inspired Mark to set up the Kiyan Prince Foundation. This organisation seeks to combat knife crime and gang behaviour by giving British youth different outlets, like sport and educating them on the devastating consequences of knife crime. The Foundation was set up in 2008 and has since helped countless young people to achieve their full potential and turn away from gang culture. Mark is seen by many as the one of Britain’s most high-profile figureheads in the fight against knife and gun crime and he has been awarded the Children’s Champion award for his efforts. But the battle is ongoing, so if you want to get involved or donate, you can do so by visiting their website kiyan.org. This short documentary by Jauden Bovell, Joanne Omoregie and Angelique Copeland explains what inspired Mark to set up the foundation and gives you a great insight into some of the fantastic work that they do.
