Marymount Names Hudson Bates Head Men’s Volleyball Coach Arlington, Va. – Marymount University has hired Hudson Bates as its new head men’s volleyball coach, as announced by Director of Athletics Debbie Warren on Tuesday. A former standout at nearby George Mason University, Bates will lead the Saints on the court during their inaugural 2014 season. “Hudson is a great choice to lead the Marymount men’s volleyball program into its first season of competition,” Warren said. “His strong ties to volleyball in the state of Virginia, as well as his reputation on the professional circuit, will help build the program from the ground up.” Bates played at GMU from 2005-08 and proved to be one of the top players in program history during the rally scoring era. He still ranks third overall in kills with 1143, fifth in service aces with 70, seventh in blocks with 272 and eighth in digs with 412. Bates was a three-time EIVA All-East selection and was named the EIVA Newcomer of the year in 2005. Bates began his coaching career following graduation as a volunteer assistant with his alma mater from 2008-09. During his time on the Patriots staff, Bates spent two years training with the USA National Team from 2008-10 while also playing professionally in the Puerto Rican Superior League and Qatar National League from 2008-12. Ranked in the top-50 of the USA Volleyball Beach Player Rankings in 2012, Bates currently sits at 76th. He won the AVP U26 Tour and was one of four members of the USA Beach National Team in 2010.
