Master Coach pet peeve: Teachers who teach students that our Ballroom frames are stiff. They perpetuate the misconception and ignorance that the rest of us then have to deal with. I was teaching someone the other day and they were taught that their frame should be stiff in Waltz but, in the same breath, that they should not be stiff in Swing because it would make it so that they could not communicate. News flash…wait for it…think about it a minute…if stiff arms make it so that you cannot communicate in one dance, why would it then make it so that you can communicate in another dance?! It DOES NOT! I urge students to ALWAYS take a minute to think about what they’re being told and if it does not make sense or is illogical, after first making sure you understood correctly, it is probably not correct! Dancing = bodies moving in fluid motion to music Partner dancing = 2 bodies moving in fluid motion with each other to music Summary: “Stiff” is not a word in dance vocabulary! -Master Coach Natasha Thayer
