Masters Hangover... For Spieth, anything was possible on the front nine in the final round of the PGA Tour Masters Tournament at Augusta. He has provided those streaks of brilliance and promises to entertain people in the future. Yet, his show was not enough to challenge Bubba Watson sufficiently. The most ardent fans of Tiger Woods felt his absence in this PGA tournament. Watson was a deserving champion but it was felt that the way Spieth challenged him on the front nine, he could have played a tighter golf game to push Watson to that brink of a hard test on the back nine. It has been reported that this year’s Masters Tournament got the worst rating on CBS in the last decade as far as viewership goes and that has been attributed to the absence of Tiger Woods and the less than average play demonstrated by Phil Mickelson. The final round on Sunday got a 7.8 rating as per Sports Business Daily as against a 10.2 last year when Adam Scott had that dramatic playoff situation. These figures represent the percentage of viewership in terms of homes in the States. The third factor that has attributed to a low rating this year for the Masters is that the leader, Bubba Watson, was not challenged seriously and there was not enough drama at the finish as Watson closed out with a three stroke victory. This is not to take away any credit from Bubba Watson. He deserves his championship for his bending drives, the recovery shots and highly unconventional play (dont we just love it though!). He had the ability to make his extraordinary effort look simple. Watson has almost won at two other places this past season; he ended as runner up at the Phoenix Open and at the WGC-Cadillac Championships. This has taken him to the fourth place in the world rankings in golf. Gooooo Bubba!
