Match Report: County Junior Championship, Quarter Final. Final Score: Churchill 1-13, Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0-16 after Extra-Time. Balmy conditions in Churchill on Saturday evening set the scene for a nail biting and close fought encounter which left hearts racing for players and spectators alike. Although Tomas O’Currain got Dromid off to a positive start with a point from play in the first minute ,Churchill ultimately dominated proceedings in the opening quarter, their blistering pace and accuracy proving to be insurmountable for the Pearses. Outstanding Benny Dillon scored three points from play and two frees to leave Dromid reeling after 15 minutes. Frees for Tomas O’Currain and Deaglan O’Suilleabhain kept Dromid in touch, however missed passes resulted in Churchill gaining vital possession. Points from play for Ciaran Crowley and Mikey Brennan left a four point gap between the sides, but Dromid’s war of attrition was beginning, with Deaglan O’Suilleabhain leading by example. The introduction of substitute Aodan O’Conchuir brought an experienced influence to Dromid which helped to steady the ship and another free for Deaglan O’Suilleabhain kept their fighting spirit alive. Churchill captain Chris Hurley was unlucky not to score a goal when his effort went over the crossbar and a point for Padraig J O’Suilleabhain left the half-time score at 0-8 to 0-5, with Churchill very much in the driving seat. Criostoir O’Faircheallaigh opened the scoring with a fine point from play and the introduction of Dilan O’Donnchadha gave Dromid another target man on the inside for the second half. Although the loss of Kerry Minor player Ivan Parker due to injury in the early minutes of the second half proved to be a hammer blow for the home side, Churchill showed their mettle when a point from Tomas O’Currain brought the game to a draw. Three unanswered points from Churchill followed, and the game seemed to be heading in one direction when Piarsaigh na Dromoda’s influential Deaglan O’Suilleabhain was forced to bow out with an injury. A point from Criostoir O’Faircheallaigh gave Dromid heart and although they will be disappointed with their wide count in this half they pulled back two points in the dying minutes to bring the game to extra time. The added time saw the re-introduction of Deaglan O’Suilleabhain despite injury, and Churchill perhaps feeling as if they should have killed off their opposition during their earlier period of dominance. A point from Mikey Brennan and a ‘45 for Benny Dillon were met with two points from play for Dromid to leave the teams once again inseparable heading into the thrilling final half of extra time. The momentum seemed to be in Dromid’s favour as they pulled ahead by two points with minutes to go when a late penalty awarded to Churchill left spectators in agony and ecstasy. Cillian Fitzgerald struck the ball cleanly to defeat the keeper and the home side now had the all important one point advantage. Dromid’s big match experience gave them the presence of mind to drive on for one last attack and when Deaglan O’Suilleabhain scored the pressure point to equalise the game,Piarsaigh na Dromoda were left feeling overjoyed whereas this promising, young Churchill team will feel as if the win slipped away from them. The game will be replayed in Pairc an Phiarsaigh, time and date to be confirmed and all present will hope to see an equally passionate and sporting encounter in the near future.
