May 13, 2014 Dear Robert, Thank you for contacting me. I appreciate hearing from you. Im working to provide access to affordable, high-quality phone, television, and internet services and to protect Minnesota consumers from unfair practices. Open access to the internet is critical in the 21st-century economy. Thats why Ive worked on a bipartisan basis to expand broadband access, especially in rural areas. Ive also been a leading advocate for net neutrality. Net neutrality is the free speech issue of our time -- internet service providers shouldnt be able to pick and choose what content can reach consumers. The internet belongs to the people, not huge corporations. Competition is critical to ensuring that Minnesotans have access to affordable, high-quality phone, television and internet services. I have serious concerns about consolidation in the telecommunications industry, and I have raised these concerns with federal regulators on several recent deals - including Comcasts acquisition of NBC Universal and its proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable. I will continue fighting to promote fair competition that best serves Minnesota consumers. As Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, I am focused on making sure companies and government agencies are respecting Americans privacy as new technologies emerge. Whether using a website or a smartphone application, Americans have a right to know if their personal information is being collected and what is being done with it. Thank you again for contacting me and letting me know what issues are important to you. Please dont hesitate to contact me again in the future. Sincerely, Al Franken United States Senator
