Mayor Garcia To Recap First 100 Days At Junior Chamber Luncheon Story Robert Garcia Posted: Thursday, October 16, 2014 3:21 pm By Harry Saltzgaver Executive Editor Robert Garcia will celebrate his first 100 days as Long Beach’s mayor with a luncheon speech Thursday sponsored by the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Associated Students, Inc. at California State University, Long Beach. Junior Chamber president Tony Gales said this lunch at the Grand Ballroom has taken place for the last two mayors, as well. “From Beverly O’Neill to Mayor Bob Foster, we have had a long-standing tradition of hosting Long Beach’s leadership for their first 100 days in office,” Gales said in a release. “This event provides a wonderful opportunity to welcome our city’s new leadership, as well as underscore our long history of support in the community.” Garcia was the former First District City Councilman when he was elected mayor in June, along with five new City Council members. They started July 15. Since then, the city’s Fiscal 2015 budget was passed, including organizational changes Garcia proposed. He also has launched several initiatives, including a new Innovation and Technology Commission and department and the city’s inclusion in the College Promise educational partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College and CSULB. “As a former member of the Long Beach Junior Chamber and CSULB alumnus, I am looking forward to working with our future leaders in helping our community reach the next level of success,” Garcia said in the release. In a separate email, Garcia said he plans to follow former Mayor Bob Foster’s lead and make the State of the City presentation free and open to the public. Before Foster became mayor, and for his first year, the State of the City speech was delivered at a luncheon put on by, and benefiting, the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. There is no affiliation between the Junior Chamber and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. Gates said sponsorships and individual tickets still are available, with tickets $100 each, including parking. The lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. Go to lbday100 for more information and to buy tickets.
