Mbabazi’s political future depends on his choices before 2016 The country has been in vicious debate about Former prime minister Amama Mbabazi’s next move after being dropped as the premier and attempts to push him out of the post of Secretary General of the NRM. There was rumour of a fallout between him and President Museveni, others intimated that it was a game between the two where Mbabazi was testing opponents of the state but it is evident the fallout is grave and may eventually be fatal to the future of the NRM. The future is uncertain and it is too early to determine Mbabazi’s future. What is clear though is that he might never enjoy the same power he had as prime minister. Mbabazi has enjoyed favour and trust from Museveni for the last 30 years, holding powerful positions. Mbabazi served his country and party, performed beyond expectations and was loyal until recently when it emerged he had ambition for the highest office in the land. Mbabazi is diplomatic, intelligent, courageous, eloquent, focussed, resilient, and organised and a smooth operator, brilliant lawyer, tough spy, a debater, and a great politician. Some have described him as a workaholic, an affective administrator of unequalled proportions. Opponents have described Mbabazi as vindictive, malicious, aloof, arrogant, criminal, unreliable, ruthless, unforgiving, wicked, conspirator. However, this might be envy. Mbabazi’s meticulous rise to the highest offices of prime minister and secretary general is no accident. Mbabazi has options; to retire and do private work, reconcile, abandon his ambition and go back to the President for a job, form a party and be on his own, or join the Opposition and form an alliance to stay relevant on the political scene. Time will tell. Mbabazi’s legacy depends on the choices he makes before 2016. So will he leave a monumental legacy or legacy of ashes?
