McMahon Chases Down Tisseyre; Just 14 Seconds Apart Saskatoon, SK – June 30, 2013 Saskatoon showed Canada today why it deserves to be a stop on a major triathlon series. Saskatoon’s reputation for sunny weather shined through as more than 500 athletes from across the country raced in the inaugural Subaru Saskatoon Triathlon. The day began with the exciting “Pro Chase” event where the women were given a 12 minute and 30 second head start. Karen Thibodeau, second place professional at last year’s Ironman Canada, lead the women out of the water but was quickly passed by 2012 “Subaru Chase” winner Magali Tisseyre. Sara Gross (Victoria) was third out of the water. Olympian Brent McMahon kicked it off for the men with an amazing swim, placing him as the most likely male competitor to chase down the women. Next out of the water was Andrew Russell and Ironman 70.3 World Championship podium finisher Jeff Symonds. Tisseyre held the lead and was the first woman off the bike. However, McMahon had rode himself into the third place overall position with only two women now in front. He caught Thibodeau early in the run and erased a 5 minute and 20 second deficit to catch Tisseyre in the final kilometer eking out the win by a mere 14 seconds! Symonds had a strong finish to move in to the third overall placing. “Finishing just 14 seconds behind Brent who is such a strong athlete and an Olympian – I am super happy! However, I will be back next year for revenge” said Tisseyre. Outside of the elite event, this was a big day for the amateur divisions. There were many qualifications for both Provincial and World Championship teams. With Olympic Distance World Championships in Edmonton next year it is an opportunity to race for Canada in their home country. Provincial Championships will also take many athletes to either Toronto or to the 4th stop of the Subaru Western Triathlon Series: Vancouver on July 14th for the Long Distance National Championships. River Landing was filled to the brim with athletes, spectators, and volunteers; an amazing sight given that parts of the area were still under water only yesterday due to all the flooding in Alberta. Next stop is the Saunders Subaru Half Iron event held in Victoria at beautiful Elk Lake. Up next, and new to the roster this year, is the sunny city of Saskatoon ; featuring Pike Lake Provincial Park, charming country roads and an exciting downtown finish in the lovely River Valley! In July, Vancouver hosts the Series along the magnificent Spanish Banks beaches, framed by the city skyline and the panoramic Coastal Mountains. The final stop in September is mountain-bound Banff National Park, where participants swim in pristine Two Jack Lake, cycle the famous Minnewanka Loop and finish down breathtaking Banff Avenue with Cascade Mountain providing the perfect backdrop.
