Me and the kids lived out next to Lake Merced....I had just come home from work/school on streetcar route with tunnel...home talking on phone with a friend in silicon valley....he suddenly yelled, I gotta dive under my desk , me thinking he had just gone insane... then the shake began....we did our usual earthquake ritual and ran onto balcony singing Shake It Up Baby....the shaking continued, we watched as trees swayed and on the lake the rowing club out for practice began to scream as the water rolled around..... still shaking, the lights went out, eery....pillar of smoke on the horizon....we turned on our portable TV.....sobering news footage....we needed supplies and to call our worried kin......grabbed our bikes and made our way down the dark staircase....our TV was very popular as no one had electricity...made it to near by shopping center....pay phone could only connect with New York city , so she had to call everyone to tell them we were safe.....Walgreens windows were broken but the clerks were in front selling batteries, candles, water, etc......we loaded up on supplies and went back with plenty batteries so the entire building it seems crowded in to watch the TV......made lots of friends that night, the gathering of shocked survivors is a feeling I will never forget
