Media Release 15 November, 2013 “Zille’s Peace Mediation Forum power struggle forces mother and daughter, 9, to live in Dog Kennel” Statement by Roscoe Jacobs, Secretary of Hout Bay Civic Association The Hout Bay Civic Association is gravely concern but not the least surprised by the infighting and power struggle within the Hangberg Peace and Mediation Forum. This has resulted in a mother, Bereldine Cornelius and her daughter, 9, sleeping in a dog kennel. The Hout Bay Civic Association was informed a month back by the City of Cape Town that the Peace and Mediation Forum has new leadership, just like the previous leadership the community was not aware by whom and when they we elected to be the sole representation of the community. The backing of this structure by Mayor Patricia De Lille and Premier Helen Zille has resulted in them adopting a dictating leadership style similar to that of the two ladies. This has result in members of the PMF being beyond approach and threatening residents, they will have them arrested. Cornelius is a victim of a fire which destroyed her home and she was prevented to rebuild her house by a member of the PMF. Another member of the PMF has said that she can build her home and that the City of Cape Town has okay this. Cornelius has requested this permission in writing and is still waiting for it. In the meantime on Wednesday she went to clear the plot were her home once stood and was confronted by the PMF member representing Texas and the police informing her she can’t rebuild her house. As a result of the power struggles Bereldine Cornelius is forced to live like a dog with her nine year old daughter. The Hout Bay Civic Association is a community based organization in Hout Bay it has been in existence for 31 years. It was known as the Hout Bay Action Committee in the apartheid era and has a history of advocating for the struggles of the poor and working class in Hout Bay Issued by Roscoe Jacobs, on behalf of the Hout Bay Civic Association Secretary 0790719265 roscoejacobs@hotmail @CapeTimesSA @TheCapeArgus @CapeTalk567.
