Meet S. A. Hunt (a/k/a Sam) & his project: Two books into my fantasy series The Outlaw King, Im beginning to run out of money. See, I live in a part of the country where its a half-hour drive to the nearest traffic light. And the few businesses within walking distance (thanks to my divorce, I no longer have a car) do not hire Veterans, thanks to the undercurrent of distrust currently flowing through American employers. Convinced by movies like Brothers and Full Metal Jacket that every Veteran is a ticking PTSD timebomb, they shunt us into the gutter and onto Americas sidewalks. But we are extremely hard-working individuals who deserve an opportunity at a life just as good as anyone elses. I should write thank-you notes to the HR guys that never gave me a chance, because they unwittingly allowed me to pursue my dreams. Bereft of support from my community, I took it upon myself to make my dream happen and I wrote two 480-page novels, The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree and Law of the Wolf. A year into my writing career Im beginning to see some moderate success, and the future only looks bright. New fans contact me by the week, gushing to me out of the blue about how much they enjoy the books, and writers email me looking for writing tips. I am currently at work on volume 3, Ten Thousand Devils, which hopefully will top out at about 600+ pages. Unfortunately, Im beginning to run out of money. Up until this point Ive been living on savings from my deployment to Afghanistan in 2011, proceeds from doing inexpensive cover-art commissions for other authors, and an odd job I did when I got home where I was terminated because someone was spreading rumors that I had PTSD. I worked with computers in Afghanistan, people. So, basically over the last two years Ive managed to feed myself on cover art fees and the $1000 I had when I stepped off the bus from Afghanistan (soldiers, dont get married before you deploy, and if you do, make sure you can trust your potential new spouse). But the well is running dry, folks, and the art commissions arent happening fast enough to keep the lights on and food on the shelves. Couple that with a four-year-old rent-to-owned laptop that sounds and acts like it might be sputtering into the homestretch, and Im afraid life might just be backing me into a corner lately. So a friend of mine convinced me that before my computer kicks the bucket and I starve to death, I should submit to GoFundMe and see if anything good comes of it. I hope it does. Fingers crossed.
