Melbourne Rare Wine Dinner – A Focus on Burgundy Join me, Shannon Noble from Rare Wine Dinners when we return to Melbourne. Melbourne you asked for it so here it is our focus on Burgundy with 4 wines from one of the most sought after regions on earth. As with all Rare Wine Dinners we start the night on a glass of sparkling wine, this time it is Billecart Salmon from Champagne in France. We then head straight to Grand Cru Burgundy for our first white wine with a 1976 Remoissenet Domaine Baron Thenard Le Montrachet, this warm vintage produced ripe classically proportioned wines that are now perfectly aged. Following this we take a break from Burgundy and head to Riesling country, Germany for 2 perfectly aged Spatlese Riesling from 1983 and 1988. Next we head back to Burgundy in France for a trio of Red Burgundy 1962 Gevrey Chambertin Unquestionably a superior vintage. A late harvest of sound, fully ripe grapes. 1969 Chambolle-Musigny It took a little time to realise that this was by far the finest vintage of the period, thanks to the excellent acidity which made, and has sustained the 69′s. A late harvest with a small, sound, ripe crop. 1978 Gevrey Chambertin A great vintage. A small but healthy crop of ripe aromatic wines with good color. Thanks to high extract and tannin, the best are still drinking very well. All our wines are from cold European cellars to ensure the best possible condition. Provenance is Paramount at Rare Wine Dinners and these wines will show you why. Then we head to Italy with a Nebbiolo Barolo Riserva from Giacomo Borgogno and the top vintage of 1958. Then the vintage of vintages for Bordeaux, 1961 and Chateau Branaire Ducru. 1961 is benchmark claret, a great vintage often compared to that of 1945. The wines are today very impressive, the berries were small with concentrated flavors and thick skins resulting in very powerful but tannic wines. Almost undrinkable on release, time has allowed the wines to blossom into some of the greatest Bordeaux wines of all time. Then last but certainly not least is a rich, powerful, luscious and superbly balanced Beerenauslese Riesling from the excellent 1975 vintage in Mosel Saar Ruwer. This superb vintage was forgotten about as it lay in the shadow of the great 76′s that followed it. Needless to say the sweeter styles are holding extremely well due to the slightly higher levels of acidity in the 75′s. 6:30pm Friday 21st November 2014 Pure South River Level, Southgate PrecinctSouthbank Melbourne Champagne NV Billecart Salmon, Brut, Champagne, France White Burgundy 1976 Remoissenet, Domaine Baron Thenard, Le Montrachet, Burgundy, France Riesling Spatlese 1983 Stadt de Frankfurt, Hochheimer Domdechaney, Rheingau, Germany 1988 Dr Burklin-Wolf, Ruppertsberger Gaisbohl, Pfalz, Germany Red Burgundy 1962 Chauvot-Labaume, Gevrey Chambertin, Burgundy, France 1969 Domaine Grivelet, Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, France 1978 Mommesin, Le Fonteny, Gevrey Chambertin, Burgundy, France Nebbiolo 1958 Borgogno, Barolo Riserva, Piedmont, Italy Bordeaux 1961 Chateau Branaire Ducru, Saint Julien, Bordeaux, France Riesling Beerenauslese 1975 Fritz Allendorf, Trittenheimer Apotheke, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Germany The above wines will be accompanied by a matched 5 course degustation meal specially prepared for this Vintage Wine Dinner by the Pure South Restaurant team.
