Mercury prize night tomorrow at the music club. In 1996 Pulp won the prize with Different Class, an album which sold around 3 million copies worldwide. In 2009 Speech Debelle won the prize with her Speech Therapy album which has sold roughly 15,000 copies to date. Are we, the public, wrong in this latter case? On the one hand, sales are hardly a guide to quality, but on the other the only thing normally holding back a great piece of music is a lack of exposure.
