The students, eighth-grader Alexa Delbridge, seventh-grader Gracie Good and sixth-grader Lexi McKee, not only attended school every day but were never tardy. The Evans Orthodontics Scholar Athlete Award went to eighth-graders Taylor Eby and Brooklyn Janz. The two were selected based on their school attitude, relationships with friends and peers, academics, and athletic participation. They each received a cash award. The Virgil Britton Social Studies award was first presented in 1976 in honor of Virgil Britton, a coach, principal and social studies teacher at the school. Selection of the recipients is based upon high grades and a deep interest in social studies. Award winners were seventh-graders McKenzie Durand and Micah Ortiz, and eighth-graders Alexa Delbridge and Bridger Gordon. Also recognized were the most valuable music students. The Excellence in Choir awards went to Bridger Gordon and Arianna Scherer while the Excellence in Band awards went Katie Armstrong and Hannah Rambo. All are eighth-graders. Ten eighth-graders were recipients of the Mark Larscheid Determination Award, sponsored by the SWMS Student Council in memory of former middle school teacher and coach Mark Larscheid. “Mark always appreciated those with natural, raw talent,” said Principal Lon Harter. “But those who won a special place in his heart were those who had the desire and strongest determination; those who have the heart of a lion and the desire to go with it.” Recipients of the Mark Larscheid Determination Award were Cody Cline and Reegin Kehn, both cross country; Kaiden Clark and Carlee Steeves, both track; Donni Bruch, volleyball; Joel Carpenter, football; Micah Holt, girls basketball; Connor Crane, boys basketball; Alexa Delbridge, cheer/dance; and Jacob Sailor, wrestling. The all-school honors assembly concluded with the presentation of the Jeff Smit Memorial Award to eighth-graders Bailey Brengle and Allison Green. The award is given annually in memory of Jeff Smit, son of Keith and Ruth Smit of Sturgis, who was between eighth and ninth grades in school when he died in an automobile accident. Recipients of the Jeff Smit Memorial Award are chosen based on the qualities that epitomize a scholar athlete such as academic performance, leadership on and off the playing field, responsibility to themselves and others, motivation, positive attitude, cooperative spirit, and dependability.
